Elpidio Torres was born on September 2,
1925 in Tondo, Manila. He was married to Lydia Gatmamitan and had
8 children. He studied Fine Arts at University of the Philippines
and started as a free lance artist for Kenkoy komiks and Bulaklak magazine
where he illustrated mostly short stories.
When he joined ACE Publications, he teamed-up
with Mars Ravelo in creating unforgetable stories like Dyesebel, Bondying,
Mambo Dyambo, Eternally, Booma, Jack N Jill and many others. He wrote
and illustrated novels like Robina for Redondo komiks and had a weekly
episode of Planeta X stories on the same publication.
He came from a clan of artist. His
father, was a sculptor, elder brother Jet is a painter/illustrator while
the youngest brother Menny, well known for creating Mr. Pid, was
a cartoonist. He's favorite Filipino artists were Amorsolo, Botong
Francisco and Mauro Malang which greatly influence his very Filipino style
of illustrations. Among the foreign artist, he loves Norman Rockwell
a lot in fact he has a collection of most of his art works. On all
his contemporaries, Nestor Redondo, his kumpare, Alfredo Alcala and Francisco
Coching were his favorites.
Aside from komiks illustrations, he has
a great passion for painting.
He studied radio/tv electronics too and
does a lot of repair on most of our electronic appliances. His hobbies
were playing chess and basketball.
His last komiks illustrations was Mr.
Incredible written by Orlando Nadres.
He died on March 1, 1972.
